Here are some Frequently Asked Questions:
My son/daughter is less than five years old, can they play Tee Ball?
No, they must be 5 years old by April 30.
Can my daughter play in the baseball league?
Yes, we have had many girls play up into Bronco, some move to softball as they become older.
How long is the season and when does it start?
Tee Ball starts in early May and goes six games (one game a week, skipping Memorial Day), Coach Pitch usually starts in April and has six games (usually one game a week on Saturday, after school is out some weekday games), Mustang, Bronco & Pony start in April and usually have fourteen games (weekday games, usually two a week). Tee Ball and Coach Pitch will start practice after daylight savings time changes. Mustang, Bronco & Pony coaches tend to start in March (Mustang, Bronco & Pony are competitive leagues and practice time is essential to being competitive).
How do I become a Coach?
You must inform the league director of your interest in being a coach (the earlier, the better as new positions are awarded on a first come first serve basis) which is followed by an approval process. Being an assistant coach is an excellent way to "get your feet wet".
BSM gives head coaches the first right of refusal on coaching the following year (as long as enough players signup), meaning that this year's coach will have the best opportunity to coach next year. Typically coaches start out in Tee Ball or Coach Pitch and stay with it all the way up.
The league director will be more concerned about the type of person and character of the coach applicant, than the sports knowledge. BSM feels that sports knowledge can be learned or supplemented in many different ways (i.e. a knowledgeable assistant coach that may not be able to commit the time to being a Head Coach), but qualities that are impossible to teach like patience, responsibility, integrity and a commitment to kids are something we hold as the first priority in choosing a coach.
Starting with the 2004 Season, Greensboro Parks and Recreation began to require police background checks on all Head Coaches and all Assistant Coaches - no exceptions.
What equipment do I need to purchase?
A baseball glove (of course!)
A hat, each player needs to wear a baseball hat, one will be issued with the uniform, but they will need a hat before that.
Bats are provided up through Coach Pitch, most players end up purchasing a bat by Mustang, if they don't, they end up using one of the other player's bats.
Baseball shoes/cleats - good to start this during Coach Pitch (Tee Ball is OK) so they are used to them by Mustang (do not purchase metal cleats).
When do players start pitching to each other?
This happens in Mustang. In Tee Ball and Coach Pitch a coach will pitch to them (no strikes or balls) and if they do not hit the ball in five pitches they then use a tee.
What is different between Tee Ball and Coach Pitch?
No score is kept, no strikes, no balls, all players play the field, all players bat. This is a low impact starter league (low impact on player and parents).
In Coach Pitch score is kept and the inning is over when three outs or five runs are scored, whichever comes first. This is an excellent transition to Mustang baseball where kids pitch to kids, strikes are kept, etc.
Do you have tryouts or cuts?
Tee Ball, Coach Pitch and Mustang - no.
Bronco and Pony do if we have more than an even number of 12 players per team.
What leagues have All Star teams?
Greensboro Parks & Recreation has All Star teams starting with the Mustang league.
What should I do if I do not like something my child's coach is doing?
Never approach the coach during a game or practice in this situation. Call the coach on the phone (so that the players do not see a parent vs. coach situation), if it cannot be resolved on the phone, ask the coach for a one on one meeting away from the practice, game and players. If you feel that further action is necessary, contact the league director. Know this; the Association will work very hard to support the coach, as the coach is the person that has volunteered a great deal of personal time and commitment to work with kids.
Can I choose the coach my child plays for?
No, but in the case of brothers or sisters you can request that they be on the same team if they are in the same age group.
Where do our teams practice?
Practices will be held (to the best of our ability) in Brown Summit.
Where do we play games?
Tee Ball & Coach Pitch is in Brown Summit, all other leagues play in Greensboro on Greensboro Parks & Recreation fields assigned and scheduled by them. We have no control over when or where, but the Parks & Recreation fields are usually very nice.
Do you offer Fall Baseball?
Yes, see our Fall Baseball page via the main Baseball page.
