Here are some Frequently Asked Questions:
What equipment do I need to purchase?
A good pair of basketball shoes.
Basketball shorts (recommended).
Who referees the games?
Middle school and high school referees.
Can parents address the referees?
Under no circumstances may any parent approach a referee. We are extremely fortunate to have the availability of the referees and the association will make every effort to support the referee in any situation possible. Any parent that approaches any referee at a BSM event may be banned from attending any future BSM events.
What height goal is used?
8 foot for the six to eight year olds.
10 foot for every one else.
What size basketball is used?
The 28.5 ball is used for all girls games.
The 28.5 ball is used for boys six through ten.
Standard regulation balls are used for boys eleven and up.
Do you have tryouts or cuts?
No, we have open drafts and all players are assigned to a team.
What should I do if I do not like something my child's coach is doing?
Never approach the coach during a game or practice in this situation. Call the coach on the phone, if it cannot be resolved on the phone (so that the players do not see a parent - coach situation) ask the coach for a one on one meeting away from the practice, game and players. Know that the Association will work very hard to support the coach as the coach is the person that has volunteered a great deal of personal time to work with kids. If you feel that further action is necessary, contact the league director.
Can I choose the coach my child plays for?
No, you can request a coach for ability reasons, reputation or that you want your child to be on the same team as a friend or someone you can share rides with. The association will try to work with this when possible, but it is highly likely that we won't be able to co-ordinate everybody's requests due to facility space, coaches and other players needs.
Can I be a coach?
Each year during drafts, BSM gives the previous year coaches first choice on coaching, then vacant positions (based on the number of players that signup) are solicited from the parents/guardians in attendance. Be sure the league director knows that you wish to coach.
Where do our teams practice and play games?
Practices and Games will be held at the BSM Community Gym or the Brown Summit Middle School (see schedules).
Does BSM have All Star Basketball Games?
No, the founding fathers of BSM desired for all players to have a good feeling about their basketball experience at BSM, they feared that All Star games may leave some players feeling inadequate because they did not make the All Star team. Historically the selection of All Star teams is one of the most controversial parts of a basketball season. With all of this in mind the founding fathers of BSM choose not to facilitate All Star games. Usually at the end of the season BSM has a hot shot contest and a three point contest that all are welcome to participate in. All of this is followed up by a coaches game featuring BSM coaches, and sometimes coaches from Northeast Middle & Northeast High School, no one else is allowed to play, but all are welcome to come cheer their coach to victory.
